Keep it out - it's time for everyone to recycle

We want residents to keep all recyclable material out of their black bags and recycle as much of their waste as possible so it doesn't end up in landfill. We will be engaging with residents who recycle little or nothing at all over the coming weeks to offer advice and support.

Keep it out (black bag)From 25 February 2019 the following materials will not be allowed in black bags so you must ensure that they're put into the correct recycling bag:

  • Paper
  • Card
  • Cardboard
  • Food waste
  • Cans
  • Glass
  • Plastic pots, tubs, trays, bottles
  • Garden waste

The Welsh Government has set councils strict recycling rates to meet so that more recycling is separated from black bags waste. If we don't meet these targets then Swansea Council could face hefty fines.

It costs tax payers £3.5 million a year to send black bags to landfill, half of this waste could be recycled. Non-recyclers are literally throwing money away in black bags. Sending recycling to landfill, especially food waste, has major impact on pollution. Rotting food waste produces methane gas, which is more harmful than carbon dioxide.

Did you know?

Materials such as paper, cans, glass, plastic and cardboard can be recycled and used to make new products. This is better than using materials taken from the ground or chopped down to produce products. Recycling just one tonne of paper (same weight as a small car) can save 17 trees from being cut down.
